The Ultimate Socialite: Tips for Navigating Society Events with Your Dog

Becoming the ultimate socialite. As the weather turns warmer and the days grow ever more golden, June marks the start of the Social Season in the United Kingdom. From Polo in the Park to Henley Royal Regatta, the who’s who emerge for a calendar filled with refined revelry. As more venues and events of note are increasingly opening their gates to four-legged friends, our guide to canine etiquette can help you navigate the wonderful world of society. So, before you and your canine companion become the toast of the summer season, here are our top tips for how to turn your dog into the perfect, polite plus one. Understanding Dog-Friendly Society Events While it’s tempting to RSVP ‘yes’ to every dog-friendly engagement, it’s important to make sure you and your pet’s manners are up to scratch. Basic commands like sit, stay, heel, come, and leave are a must when out in public. If your dog’s spirit leans more bohemian than aristocratic, then it might be worth booking a few sessions with a professional dog trainer. Of course, for those attending with their impeccably mannered canine companions, attention to detail remains paramount. One discreet but essential preparation? Upon arrival, take a moment to locate the nearest dog waste bin. While such matters are rarely discussed over champagne and canapés, nothing says true sophistication like a well-prepared guest who ensures both style and cleanliness are maintained throughout the day. Begin with Intimate Engagements Big events can be loud, crowded, and a bit much for some pups. If your dog isn’t used to busy places, start with local dog meetups or small gatherings before heading to somewhere like Goodwoof, a pet show, or a major social event. Small events are also great for helping your dog work on their pet-etiquette before going to a larger society event. Health Checklist Before you both step out, make sure your pet’s vaccinations are up to date. Also make sure they are well groomed – after all muddy paw prints are not the new black, especially when a fellow guest is wearing white. When out in crowds, a collar with identification tags is another must. For extra peace of mind when out, clip a GPS tracker on to a collar or harness such as this one from Tractive.com for added peace of mind. Click here for our top wellness trends for dogs in 2025. Good Manners Matter One of the best ways to make sure your dog is always on their best behaviour is by keeping them on a lead unless your host gives the all-clear for off-lead adventures. Even the best-behaved dogs can get a bit excited in a crowd, with lots of unfamiliar sights and smells. A lead makes it easy for you to guide them to a quieter spot if things get a little too hectic. Equally important in the realm of refined doggy diplomacy is the etiquette of introductions. While it’s natural for dogs to greet one another with a courteous sniff, such encounters should always be supervised and approached with discretion. Allow your dog to greet others only when both parties are calm and their owners give clear consent. A gentle introduction on a loose lead allows your pup to mingle gracefully without causing a scene—after all, even among the canine set, first impressions matter. Not everyone is a dog lover and will be excited to see your dog. So be mindful of guests who might be nervous around our four-legged friends or may have allergies. Keep your pup close to you and don’t let them wander up to people uninvited. If they do accidentally brush against someone, a quick apology will go a long way and show your manners are just as impeccable as your pet’s. Pack Like a Pro When heading out with your social butterfly, don’t forget the essentials before leaving the house. Lead and collar Compostable poo bags (we love Earth Rated lavender-scented ones) Collapsible water bowl (like this one from Go Outdoors) A towel for emergency mud Plenty of snacks—think our Terrier Truffles, or Biscuit Paws for snack diplomacy And a few extra treats to share with new furry acquaintances By being prepared beforehand, you’ll be able to swiftly avoid any social faux pas this summer season. Finally… Bringing your dog to events can be an absolute joy and a great way for you to both make memories you will treasure for years and take lots of Instagram worthy photos. With a little effort and lots of Ruffingtons treats, you and your canine companion will become the most refined and adored guest this summer season. So, here’s to a tail-wagging summer of sun, scones, and socialising as the two of you become the ultimate socialite. How to Create a Dog-Friendly Outdoor Sanctuary: The Perfect Garden Paradise for Your Pet

Dogs love being outside in nature, and we love to spoil them in every which way. So, this year, why not create your pet the perfect dog-friendly outdoor sanctuary for them to spend hazy spring days and warm summer evenings in? The ideal outdoor sanctuary for your dog should be both safe and stimulating. Think lush, soft grass for playtime, shady spots for cooling down, and shelter from the hot sun. Plus, plenty of cosy corners for enjoying a well-earned treat and nap. Experts in luxury pet care, here’s our Ruffingtons step-by-step guide to building the perfect garden paradise for your dog. Step 1: Secure your garden When creating a dog-friendly garden, safety comes first. You need to make sure the space is both safe for your dog and for your neighbours. Think about: Fencing: Ensure your garden has a secure fence around the permitter. It must be tall enough to prevent your dog from being able to jump over it – and be sure to check for any gaps where small dogs could get through and escape. Gates: Install either self-closing or lockable gates to prevent any daring escapes for freedom. Shade and Shelter: Dogs can overheat much quicker than us humans. Trees, pergolas, gazebos, or even a humble bush can provide much-needed shade. Trees also have an added bonus of attracting songbirds to your garden – creating an idyllic soundtrack to your dog’s sanctuary. Be sure to avoid Horse Chestnut trees, though, as conkers can be eaten by dogs and cause gut blockages. Step 2: Choose Dog-Safe Plants and Landscaping Dogs love to sniff, chew, and sometimes even roll around in plants. So, your pet-friendly outdoor sanctuary should bare this in mind. Make sure your garden contains dog-safe plants and shrubs such as sunflowers, marigolds, and rosemary. Bluebells, crocuses, daffodils, and foxgloves are just some plants that are toxic to dogs when ingested. Be safe and check out every plant or tree before purchasing. Step 3: Make Playtime Fun Plan your garden around your dog’s personality, so think about how they like to play and relax. Here’s some ideas of what we think could work well depending on your space: Digging Area: If your dog loves to dig, design them a designated pit filled with sand or soil and hide toys or treats for them to find. Splash Zone: Setting up a dog-friendly water-based area is perfect for hot days – as many dogs love to splash about. Always make sure that shady areas are available to them and they have plenty of water to drink – and remember that towel! Agility Course: For those dogs who have lots of energy, why not create an agility course with tunnels, ramps, or weave poles to help make your bond even stronger and improve your communications skills. Sensory Experience: Grow some fragrant herbs like dill, purple basil and thyme which are none-toxic for dogs and goes well in many meals. Giving both you and your dog a sensory experience you will love and a way to add extra flavour to your favourite foods. Step 4: Create a Calm and Relaxing Vibe Your dog-friendly outdoor sanctuary should be as relaxing as it is stimulating for your dog. Be sure to think about: Quiet Corners: Set up peaceful areas away from busy footpaths or noisy neighbours, where possible so your dog can relax after a long day. Soft Lighting: If your dog enjoys evenings outdoors, consider gentle solar garden lights or fairy lights for a cosy atmosphere. They’re also great for making the garden a place for you and your family to enjoy after the sun goes down in the summer months. Water Access: Always ensure there’s a fresh water available for when your furry friend feels thirsty. Favourite Treats: Be sure to keep their favourite Ruffingtons treats on hand for the ultimate relaxing vibe. Step 5: Keep Your Garden Well Maintained Like all gardens, even a dog-friendly one needs a little care and attention to stay safe and enjoyable. Tidy Up: Regularly check the area for any damaged toys, sharp sticks, overgrown bushes or rubbish that could pose a hazard to your pet. Pest Control: If treating weeds or deterring pests, make sure you use dog-safe products. Creating a dog-friendly outdoor sanctuary to be enjoyed by both you and your pet doesn’t require a lot of space or a huge budget. With some thoughtful planning, you can build a space that fulfils all your dog’s natural instincts while keeping them safe, content and away from the furniture. Thank you to Victoria Gray who put together these delicious dog-friendly party recipes using our Ruffingtons treats. Did you catch them featured in the Daily Mail and the Mirror last month? Celebration Cake, serves 18-20, small slices: Ingredients: 200g wholemeal flour 1 ripe banana 1 small sweet potato, cooked and mashed Half a large carrot, grated 2 tsp coconut oil, plus a little for greasing 250ml oat milk 1 medium organic egg To decorate: 3 large potatoes, mashed Ruffingtons Terrier Truffles to decorate Preheat your oven to 200C degrees and line and grease 2 small cake tins with baking parchment. Add the banana to a bowl and mash, then add the egg, grated carrot, coconut oil and oat milk and mix together until fully combined. Add the flour and stir into the mixture until fully combined. Divide the mixture between the cake tins. Bake the cakes for 45 minutes to 1 hour until completely cooked through. (The cakes won’t rise much as there is no baking powder in the recipe.) Once cooked, remove from the oven and allow to cool on a rack. Whilst your cakes are cooling, make the frosting. Peel and chop your potatoes into pieces, then boil in a saucepan of water for 20 minutes until soft. Drain leave to cool before mashing. Spoon half the mashed potato onto one of the cakes and sandwich together. Then add the remaining mash to the top of the cake with a palette knife and decorate with Ruffingtons Terrier Truffles. Bone Broth Biscuits, makes 12: Ingredients: 100g (*Xylitol free) peanut butter 4 tbsp of honey 1 tbsp olive oil 100ml chicken bone broth 2 tbsp of rolled oats 175g wholemeal flour, plus a little extra for rolling out. Preheat your oven to 200C degrees. Whisk together peanut butter, honey, oil and chicken broth until smooth. Add the flour and oats and mix until fully combined. Add a little flour to your work surface. Turn out the dough and knead for a minute on the floured work surface, then roll the dough until it’s about 5mm thick. Using a bone cookie cutter, stamp out the cookies. Stamp out as many cookies as your cutter allows (roll up the leftover scraps and re-roll). Transfer the cookies to a baking parchment lined baking sheet. Bake the cookies for 12-14 minutes, until golden. Transfer to a rack to cool. Store them in an airtight container for up to two weeks. Puppiccinos, makes 1: Ingredients: 50ml whipped cream 1 tsp pumpkin puree To dip: Ruffingtons Dog Eclairs Whip the cream until thick. Stir through the pumpkin puree. Spoon into a cup and serve. Split your Ruffingtons Dog Eclairs and dip into the Puppiccino All recipes should be served in small slices as a party treat. Thank you once again to friend of Ruffingtons, Victoria Gray, for creating such perfect pet recipes for Ruffingtons. Gotcha day

Ideas To Celebrate Your Dog’s Gotcha Day

Bringing a dog into your life is a special moment, and what better way to celebrate than on their ‘Gotcha Day’ – the anniversary of the day you adopted your beloved friend? This is a great excuse to shower them with love, treats, and fun activities. Whether you’re celebrating your pup’s first Gotcha Day their tenth, here are some creative and heartwarming ideas to make it that little extra special. Throw a Doggy Party Invite your pup’s furry friends (and their owners) for a dog-friendly gathering at your home or a local park for some extra space. Wherever your venue, why not set up some play areas for the dogs and a feeding area with water bowls and dog-safe treats such as our Cainine Cupcakes or Dog Eclairs and even put up some fun doggy decorations such as this glittery Happy Gotcha Day banner from Amazon? Don’t forget refreshments and treats for your human guests as well. Pamper Your Pup Treat your four–legged friend to a little pampering with a relaxing bath, a gentle brush-out, and maybe even a paw massage. Or, if they enjoy being groomed, why not take them to a professional groomer for a fresh cut and a paw-dicure to help them feel fabulous on their special day? Give Them a New Toy or Accessory Surprise your pet with a ‘Happy Gotcha Day’ gift such as a new toy like the Kong Classic, a cosy bed such as the Hideaway from Ivy and Duke, or stylish collar to mark the special occasion. Pick something that suits your dog’s personality and will bring them lots of joy on their special day. Donate in Their Honour Another great way to celebrate is to give back to the dog shelter. If they’re adopted or rescued, then perhaps even to the place where you first found your pet. You can donate much needed supplies such as dog food, toys and blankets or even volunteer a few hours to help other dogs in need of their forever homes. Plan a Photoshoot Capture the joy of the occasion with a special photoshoot. You don’t have to go to all the expense of hiring a photographer and a studio. Find a space in your home with lots of light and add a backdrop such as a decorative blanket. Then, dress your pet up in a cute outfit or bowtie and take adorable pictures to commemorate the day. You can even print them out and add them to a themed photo album for you to both treasure for years to come. Create a ‘Barkuterie’ Board Make a dog-friendly charcuterie board with different treats like sliced apples, peanut butter, carrots and even some of our Biscuit Paws. You could even make a human version of your Barkuterie board for you to eat as well. Who says you can’t enjoy a date day with your pup? Get a Custom Portrait or Paw Print Art Commission a custom pet portrait or make DIY paw print art using pet-safe ink or clay such as this air dry clay kit from Not on the High Street. Which can serve as a beautiful keepsake to treasure. End the Day with Extra Cuddles After all the excitement, why not wind down with some quality time together? Whether it is belly rubs, a long cuddle session, head pat or scratch on their favorite scratch spot is a great way to remind them just how much they are loved. Your dog’s Gotcha Day is a celebration of your love, companionship, and the wonderful bond you both share. No matter how you choose to celebrate, the most important thing is to make your pup feel special and appreciated. After all, they’ve brought so much joy into your life – it’s only fair to return the favor!

Picnic

How to Create a Pup-Perfect Picnic for Your Dog

A picnic is the perfect way to spend quality time with your furry best friend. With the fresh air, open spaces, and plenty of opportunities for play, a dog-friendly picnic is a perfect bonding experience. Whether you’re celebrating a special occasion or simply enjoying a sunny afternoon, creating a pup-perfect picnic takes a little planning and preparation. Here’s how to make it an unforgettable day for you and your beloved pet. Find Your Dog’s Favourite Place Before you pack your picnic basket, choose a location where your dog will be happy and comfortable. Not all parks, beaches, or outdoor areas are dog-friendly, so be sure to check in advance. Look for places with plenty of space for your dog to run and play while also ensuring that pets are welcome. Consider your dog’s personality when selecting the perfect spot. Do they love the beach? Find a dog-friendly shoreline where they can splash in the waves. Or do they prefer to enjoy a quiet and peaceful atmosphere? A serene park with grassy fields may be the best choice. If your pet is social and loves meeting new friends, a dog-friendly park can provide plenty of interaction opportunities. The key is choosing a location where your companion can relax and have fun. If travelling isn’t an option, why not have a picnic at home? Your garden, patio, or even a cosy indoor setting can be just as enjoyable for your pup. Set up a blanket in a shaded area, bring out their favourite toys, and enjoy a stress-free picnic in the comfort of your own space. This is especially great for dogs who prefer familiar environments or get anxious in new spaces. Take Some Favourite Treats No picnic is complete without delicious food, and that includes treats for your four-legged friend. Pack some of your dog’s favourite luxury treats to make the day extra special. Ruffingtons’ Canine Cupcakes are perfect for a quick picnic treat or perhaps try our Marbled Dog Snaps a decadent delight that your pup can sink their teeth into. Picture-perfect and equally as delicious, Ruffingtons treats are the ideal accompaniment to any dog-friendly picnic. Some other dog-friendly picnic items you can consider are: Blueberries Apple slices (without seeds) Banana chunks Boiled chicken chunks Just be sure to avoid toxic foods like chocolate, grapes, onions, and anything seasoned with garlic or salt. Everything should be fed in moderation and if you’re unsure on your pet’s dietary requirements, consult your vet. Keep It Cool – Look for Spots with Shade Just like humans, our pets can get overheated in the sun. Keeping your dog cool and comfortable is crucial for an enjoyable picnic. When selecting your picnic spot, look for areas with plenty of natural shade from trees or bring along a portable sunshade or umbrella to create a cool resting area. Make sure to bring plenty of fresh water to keep your dog hydrated throughout the day. A collapsible water bowl is an essential addition to your picnic gear. Avoid hot pavement or sand, as these surfaces can burn your dog’s paws. If you’re picnicking during the hotter months, plan your outing during the cooler parts of the day – either early morning or late afternoon. Bring Some Games A picnic isn’t just about lounging and eating – it’s about having fun and bonding too! Brining some of your dog’s favourite toys and games will keep them entertained and engaged. A game of fetch, frisbee, or tug-of-war will help burn off some energy and keep your pup happy. Plus, enhance the special connection the two of you share. If you’re in an open space, consider bringing a long leash or a secure playpen for some safe off-leash playtime. Have Fun! The most important part of any pup-perfect picnic is to have fun! Enjoy the outdoors, play with your dog, and take plenty of photos to capture the memories. Let your dog explore, sniff, and experience new surroundings while keeping an eye on their comfort and safety. Remember to clean up after your pup and leave no trace behind. Bring waste bags to dispose of any mess and keep the area clean for other visitors. Being a responsible pet owner ensures that more places remain dog-friendly for future adventures. A pup-perfect picnic is all about spending quality time with your dog in a relaxing and fun environment. By choosing the right location, keeping your pup cool, packing delicious treats, and bringing engaging games, you’ll create an unforgettable day for you and your dog. 2025 Trends For Dog Care & Wellness

2025 Trends For Dog Care & Dog Wellness As we begin a new year, it’s the ideal time to seek new ways to show your love for your furry friend and improve their quality of life. From nutrition and treating to full blown pampering, here’s a look at the top trends shaping how we can care for our beloved dogs this year (and always!). Personalised Nutrition It’s undoubtable that pet parents are becoming increasingly aware of the importance of diet on a pet’s long-term health, which is why sales of raw food and personalised meals are increasing and forecast to rise again in 2025. Owners can look at factors such as their dog’s breed, age, and preexisting health conditions to make sure the food they eat keeps them in tiptop shape. But don’t forget, as humans, dogs also can enjoy a varied diet that includes both nutritional meals and tasty treats; and this is detriment to their own wellness and happiness (and strengthening that pet to owner bond, of course). Luxury Dog Fashion At Ruffingtons, we’re all about showering your dog with the love and affection they so duly deserve. One of the ways owners can do this is by going above and beyond what they provide to their pet. With this considered, we think this year will definitely bring about an increase in responsible pet fashion. This definitely doesn’t mean dressing pets up for your own vanity purposes, but considering what will improve their own wellness such as warm jackets in the winter and waterproofs (we all know a dog that refuses to walk in the rain, after all). We’re a big fan of the stylish yet practical dog clothing from Lords and Labradors, and did you know Trespass also has a Tresspaws range for pets that love to explore? Pet Mental Wellbeing Just like humans, dogs can experience mental challenges such as anxiety and stress. We believe the emphasis on calming supplements and enrichment activities such as pet reiki, aromatherapy and acupuncture will only continue to grow. It’s so important, after all, to help keep our dogs healthy in both mind and body. Unbreakable Owner & Pet Bonds Now more than ever our pets are our closest confidants, our bestest friends. This is only ever going to continue to be the case, and sometimes words simply aren’t enough to show our dogs how much they mean to us. As Ruffingtons enters its first year as a business (we launched in the autumn of 2024) we look forward to being the backbone of creating more special memories between humans and their furry friends. Whether that’s being the ingredients to a special afternoon tea moment, or simply being the treat that brings your pet joy after they’ve done something worth rewarding. Ruffingtons was born out of a desire to strengthen the bond between pets and their owners and show our dogs simply how much they mean. We look forward to being part of the 2025 trends in dog care and wellness, this year and beyond. To find out more about Ruffingtons and our story, click here.
