How to Adjust a New Dog to Changing Seasons

How to Adjust a New Dog to Changing Seasons

Welcoming a new pet to the family is an exciting moment, but when the seasons change, your new four-legged family member can present some unique challenges. But whether you’re bringing home your new best friend in warmer or colder months, our handy hints and tips will ensure you’re always prepared whatever the weather. Understanding Your Dog’s Seasonal Sensitivity New dogs face a double adjustment period when arriving in a new home. Firstly, acclimating to their surroundings and secondly, dealing with the ever-changing weather conditions. This can affect some dogs’ behaviour, appetite, energy levels, and overall comfort. Unlike dogs who already have established routines with their families, newcomers haven’t yet learned what to expect from your household. So, add in the weather and they can often find themselves a bit confused. Different breeds and ages also respond differently to seasonal changes. Breeds like Huskies with thick winter coats are well suited to cold temperatures and thrive when the mercury drops, while breeds such as Greyhounds may need additional layers to keep them warm and cosy, especially when going outside. A warming fleece such as this Climate Changer Jacket from Ruffwear keeps dogs warm while allowing for layering with other coats for additional warmth should you need to. But remember the reverse is also true; dogs with thick coats can struggle in the summer months, so make sure you groom them regularly. This can help remove any dead or excess hair while ensuring their coat remains free of matts and knots. Preparing Your Home for Seasonal Comfort With just a few simple adjustments you can create an ideal, comfortable environment for your new canine companion. One of the easiest changes you can make is ensuring your dog has access to bedding (we love Lords & Labradors) that can be easily adjusted. Just like humans love a good winter and summer duvet, dogs should also have lightweight blankets for warmer months that can easily be layered with thicker materials as it gets colder. Another top tip is finding a spot for your dog to sleep that is away from heating vents, windows, and doors. A spot that’s ideal in summer, could quickly become drafty in winter, so you may need to relocate them when the temperature changes. Adjusting Exercise Routines, Rain Or Shine! When the season change, you may need to also adjust their exercise routine, for example going out later on in the day when it’s cold and earlier in the morning when its warm. By establishing a flexible routine early on will help prevent disruption to their adjustment process later on. A good way to do this is to gradually modify their walk times to maintain consistency while adapting to the available light. This helps your dog adjust without sudden shocking changes to their schedule later on. If your transitioning into the colder months make sure to start with shorter outdoor sessions and gradually increase duration as they build tolerance to the temperature changes. Regardless of the weather, your pet’s paws require special attention in both the summer and winter months. Salt and ice-melting chemicals can irritate sensitive paw pads in the colder months, while hot pavements can also burn them so make sure to regularly check their paws to help keep them in good condition. Also consider protective boots such as these Rukka Rubber Sock Shoes which also protect when walking on slippery surfaces. Staying On Top Of Seasonal Appetite Changes Dogs can be sensitive to appetite changes while they settle down in their new home and they get into a feeding routine with you. So, remember to monitor their eating patterns closely at first especially if you’re entering a new season, as stress from environmental shifts can temporarily affect their interest in food. During colder months, dogs who spend significant time outdoors may require an increase in their calorie intake in order to maintain their energy levels and body temperature. However, while indoors, they may need less food in order to prevent weight gain. But remember always consult with your vet before making changes to your pet’s diet. Emotional Support For Your Pet Seasonal changes can trigger behavioural changes in dogs especially those who are adjusting to a new environment and routine. Each dog is different, but some dogs can become anxious during storms or high winds, while others might show increased restlessness when daylight hours become shorter. One of the best ways to combat this is to maintain consistent daily routines as much as possible, even when weather forces indoor activities. Regular feeding times, bathroom breaks, and bonding activities help provide stability during environmental changes. If your dog seems particularly stressed during weather transitions, consider calming aids such as an Adaptil Calm Diffuser which can be mixed into food and treats. Building Long-Term Seasonal Success Remember helping a new dog to adjust to seasonal changes is a gradual process that will improve with time. While their first summer or winter with you may seem challenging as time goes on and they develop confidence in your care and predictability the changing seasons will become routine. It’s a good idea to keep detailed notes about your dog as they settle into their new home, especially as the seasons change. This information will be invaluable for the future and can help during vet visits. The most important tip however is to stay patient and flexible during your new dog’s adjustment period. Remember every dog adapts at their own pace, and building trust through constant care and attention will create the foundation for your years together. As the season change your dog will require extra attention and preparation, but it’s also a wonderful opportunity to learn about your furry companion’s preferences and needs. With a bit of thoughtful planning and guidance, you can help your new family member feel secure and comfortable through every season of the year ahead. How to Create a Dog-Friendly Outdoor Sanctuary: The Perfect Garden Paradise for Your Pet

Dogs love being outside in nature, and we love to spoil them in every which way. So, this year, why not create your pet the perfect dog-friendly outdoor sanctuary for them to spend hazy spring days and warm summer evenings in? The ideal outdoor sanctuary for your dog should be both safe and stimulating. Think lush, soft grass for playtime, shady spots for cooling down, and shelter from the hot sun. Plus, plenty of cosy corners for enjoying a well-earned treat and nap. Experts in luxury pet care, here’s our Ruffingtons step-by-step guide to building the perfect garden paradise for your dog. Step 1: Secure your garden When creating a dog-friendly garden, safety comes first. You need to make sure the space is both safe for your dog and for your neighbours. Think about: Fencing: Ensure your garden has a secure fence around the permitter. It must be tall enough to prevent your dog from being able to jump over it – and be sure to check for any gaps where small dogs could get through and escape. Gates: Install either self-closing or lockable gates to prevent any daring escapes for freedom. Shade and Shelter: Dogs can overheat much quicker than us humans. Trees, pergolas, gazebos, or even a humble bush can provide much-needed shade. Trees also have an added bonus of attracting songbirds to your garden – creating an idyllic soundtrack to your dog’s sanctuary. Be sure to avoid Horse Chestnut trees, though, as conkers can be eaten by dogs and cause gut blockages. Step 2: Choose Dog-Safe Plants and Landscaping Dogs love to sniff, chew, and sometimes even roll around in plants. So, your pet-friendly outdoor sanctuary should bare this in mind. Make sure your garden contains dog-safe plants and shrubs such as sunflowers, marigolds, and rosemary. Bluebells, crocuses, daffodils, and foxgloves are just some plants that are toxic to dogs when ingested. Be safe and check out every plant or tree before purchasing. Step 3: Make Playtime Fun Plan your garden around your dog’s personality, so think about how they like to play and relax. Here’s some ideas of what we think could work well depending on your space: Digging Area: If your dog loves to dig, design them a designated pit filled with sand or soil and hide toys or treats for them to find. Splash Zone: Setting up a dog-friendly water-based area is perfect for hot days – as many dogs love to splash about. Always make sure that shady areas are available to them and they have plenty of water to drink – and remember that towel! Agility Course: For those dogs who have lots of energy, why not create an agility course with tunnels, ramps, or weave poles to help make your bond even stronger and improve your communications skills. Sensory Experience: Grow some fragrant herbs like dill, purple basil and thyme which are none-toxic for dogs and goes well in many meals. Giving both you and your dog a sensory experience you will love and a way to add extra flavour to your favourite foods. Step 4: Create a Calm and Relaxing Vibe Your dog-friendly outdoor sanctuary should be as relaxing as it is stimulating for your dog. Be sure to think about: Quiet Corners: Set up peaceful areas away from busy footpaths or noisy neighbours, where possible so your dog can relax after a long day. Soft Lighting: If your dog enjoys evenings outdoors, consider gentle solar garden lights or fairy lights for a cosy atmosphere. They’re also great for making the garden a place for you and your family to enjoy after the sun goes down in the summer months. Water Access: Always ensure there’s a fresh water available for when your furry friend feels thirsty. Favourite Treats: Be sure to keep their favourite Ruffingtons treats on hand for the ultimate relaxing vibe. Step 5: Keep Your Garden Well Maintained Like all gardens, even a dog-friendly one needs a little care and attention to stay safe and enjoyable. Tidy Up: Regularly check the area for any damaged toys, sharp sticks, overgrown bushes or rubbish that could pose a hazard to your pet. Pest Control: If treating weeds or deterring pests, make sure you use dog-safe products. Creating a dog-friendly outdoor sanctuary to be enjoyed by both you and your pet doesn’t require a lot of space or a huge budget. With some thoughtful planning, you can build a space that fulfils all your dog’s natural instincts while keeping them safe, content and away from the furniture. Divide the mixture between the cake tins. Bake the cakes for 45 minutes to 1 hour until completely cooked through. (The cakes won’t rise much as there is no baking powder in the recipe.) Once cooked, remove from the oven and allow to cool on a rack. Whilst your cakes are cooling, make the frosting. Peel and chop your potatoes into pieces, then boil in a saucepan of water for 20 minutes until soft. Drain leave to cool before mashing. Spoon half the mashed potato onto one of the cakes and sandwich together. Then add the remaining mash to the top of the cake with a palette knife and decorate with Ruffingtons Terrier Truffles. Add a little flour to your work surface. Turn out the dough and knead for a minute on the floured work surface, then roll the dough until it’s about 5mm thick. Using a bone cookie cutter, stamp out the cookies. Stamp out as many cookies as your cutter allows (roll up the leftover scraps and re-roll). Transfer the cookies to a baking parchment lined baking sheet. Bake the cookies for 12-14 minutes, until golden. Transfer to a rack to cool. Store them in an airtight container for up to two weeks. Do’s & Don’ts Of Dog Manners - How To Have a Sophisticated Pup

Do’s & Don’ts Of Dog Manners – How To Have a Sophisticated Pup Nothing warms our hearts quite like the companionship and unconditional love you receive from our four-legged friends. But, just like people, dogs need to learn good dog manners to live peacefully with humans and other pets. So, whether you’re a new dog owner bringing home your first puppy or a seasoned pet parent fostering a rescue dog, here is our guide on how to make sure your pet has impeccable manners. Do’s of Dog Manners Do use positive reinforcement when training your dog Training is the cornerstone of good dog manners, and the best way to train your faithful companion is with treats and praise. Our Terrier Truffles are excellent for encouraging positive behaviour and can be given when your dog follows basic commands such as sit, stay or leave it. Training them to follow basic commands also helps your pet to understand expectations in certain situations, such as knowing to sit when people visit or not to pick things up that could harm them. Do socialise your dog early Dogs that are well socialised are typically happier and more confident. By exposing your dog to different people, pets and environments both indoors and outdoors helps to reduce their anxiety and aggression. This includes getting them used to everyday household noises such as washing machines and vacuum cleaners. Also, take them for regular walks where they can learn to meet and interact with new dogs and help build up their confidence. But remember to respect other dogs’ boundaries, as not all dogs enjoy socialising with new dogs, especially older dogs. Do remember to keep your dog on a lead in public places No matter how well-trained your furry friend is, keeping them on a lead when out in public not only protects them but those around you as it prevents any unwanted encounters with other larger dogs or wildlife or people who may have a phobia of dogs. A lead also keeps your pet from running into danger, such as roads or ponds where they can be injured. Do clean up after your dog One of the unbreakable rules of being a responsible pet parent is picking up after your dog when in public areas. Always carry waste bags such as these Enviropaws biodegradable bags and dispose of them properly in order to help keep public paths and parks clean and sanitary. Do teach your dog to greet people politely We touched on this one earlier, but teaching your dog to greet people politely and not jump up and bark at people deserves a rule of its own. After all, not everyone enjoys having an overly excited dog or puppy jump and bark at them when entering a room. Again, use positive reinforcement to teach your dog to wait calmly and gain permission before approaching guests. This prevents any accidental trips, scares, or damage to both your guests and your faithful companion. Don’ts of dog manners Don’t allow loud, excessive barking We know dogs bark; it’s a natural part of their behavior. But when barking becomes excessive, especially in shared houses or spaces, it can become disruptive to your neighbors. A good way to stop this is to train your dog to understand quiet commands. If training doesn’t work, then it might be a good idea to consult a vet to help you address any underlying issues that cause excessive barking such as boredom, stress or anxiety. Don’t feed your dog at the table We understand those puppy dog eyes can be hard to resist but don’t give into begging at the table as it can lead to bad habits and potential health issues. Also, dogs don’t understand that certain human foods are bad for them. Instead, train your dog to stay at their designated feeding space and eat from their bowl during mealtimes. Don’t leave your dog unattended when in public While it can be tempting to leave your dog tied up outside a shop for a few minutes just while you pop in, it’s not worth the risk as your dog can be easily stolen or cause stress and anxiety for your four-legged friend. Don’t allow your dog to chase wildlife or other animals While dogs have natural prey instincts and love to play chase, allowing them to chase squirrels, cats, birds or other dogs can be dangerous. Instead, play it safe and take dog friendly toys with you when you take your pet for a walk. Also, train them to respond to call commands if you think they may try to chase another animal. Teaching your pet good manners isn’t just about obedience, it’s about ensuring your dog is not only well behaved but also remains safe both indoors and out. By following our do’s and don’ts of dog manners, you’ll help create positive experiences for your dog and for the people and pets they interact with. Which means they’ll be even more deserving of a Ruffingtons treat for being such a good boy or girl.

Blue Monday

#BlueMonday - How Having A Pet Boosts Your Wellbeing

The third Monday of January, often dubbed Blue Monday, is said to be the gloomiest day of the year – often marked by dark skies, post-holiday fatigue, and mounting to-do lists. But what if there was a fluffy solution to beat the blues? Science has long confirmed what we at Ruffingtons, and all pet owners have always known: dogs have a profound impact on mental health. Our four-legged friends are more than just pets – they’re partners in wellbeing; offering comfort, structure, and boundless joy. Let’s see how having a pet can elevate your wellbeing, not just on Blue Monday, but all year round. The Science of Stroking There’s an intrinsic comfort in touch, and pets fulfil this most basic human need in ways that are both therapeutic and luxurious. Stroking a dog’s fur has actually been shown to lower cortisol levels while elevating oxytocin, the hormone associated with bonding and love. It’s a sensory experience as calming as it is indulgent – a tactile reminder that life’s greatest comforts are often the simplest. In addition to this, the simple act of playing with a dog triggers a cascade of positive brain chemistry. Increased levels of serotonin and dopamine – natural mood stabilisers – help calm and relax, offering a welcome respite from life’s stresses. A Stimulus for Healthy Exercise For those who value both health and lifestyle, pets are the ultimate motivators. Daily walks and outdoor play encourage a level of physical activity that enhances cardiovascular health and elevating moods. Whether it’s a brisk morning walk or a serene afternoon in the park as the sun sets, these moments enrich both body and soul, fostering vitality in even the gloomiest months. The Luxury of Structure and Routine Dogs bring a level of discipline to daily life, grounding us with their need for routine. Feeding, walking, and playtime rituals create a framework of consistency that benefits mental clarity and stability. Far from mundane, these rituals can offer moments of mindfulness, transforming these everyday tasks into acts of care and connection. Companionship: A Connection Like No Other A dog’s companionship is unparalleled in its depth and sincerity. Their intuitive nature allows them to sense when you are feeling low, offering affection, and understanding that transcends words. In a world that can sometimes feel isolating, their unwavering presence provides a sense of connection that is as rare as it is precious. Best friend is an understatement. They’re your most loyal companion. Finding Meaning and Joy Perhaps the greatest gift a dog offers is their ability to inspire joy in the present moment. From their playful exuberance to their quiet loyalty, dogs remind us to find delight in life’s simple pleasures. Caring for your furry friend instils a sense of purpose that enriches our lives, giving us a reason to smile, always. At Ruffingtons, we understand that a dog’s role in your life is more than companionship – it is a partnership in happiness and wellbeing. On Blue Monday and beyond, your dog is a source of comfort, structure, and joy that no amount of winter blues can diminish. Celebrate this unbreakable bond by exploring our range of premium Ruffingtons dog treats on our website, crafted to honour the love and loyalty your canine companion brings to your life. Give back to them the happiness they provide to you – because when it comes to lifting spirits and creating moments of joy, your dog deserves nothing but the very best.

The Importance of Winter Wellness and Keeping Your Dog Happy

The Importance of Winter Wellness and Keeping Your Dog Happy Winter can be a magical time of year, with snow-covered landscapes and cosy nights by the fire. But for pet owners, it is also a time to think about how the cold months affect our beloved friends. Just like us, our pets need a little extra care during winter to stay healthy, happy, and active. At Ruffingtons, we are here to help you keep tails wagging all season long. Here’s why winter wellness matters and some tips to keep your dog nourished in the colder months. The Challenges of Winter for Dogs Winter brings unique challenges for our canine friends. From the freezing temperatures to the days getting darker quicker, it’s easy for your dog’s routine to be disrupted. Some common winter woes for pups include: Cold weather risks: Frostbite and hypothermia aren’t just human concerns. Dogs, especially those with short coats or low body fat, are vulnerable to the cold. Dry skin and paws: Winter air and road salt can cause your dog’s skin and paws to dry out, crack, or even bleed. Reduced activity: Fewer daylight hours and cold weather might mean less outdoor play, leading to boredom or weight gain. Fortunately, a few proactive steps can make a big difference. Keep Them Warm Invest in a quality dog coat or sweater, especially for short-haired breeds or older dogs. Make sure it fits well and covers their belly and back. For smaller dogs, or those particularly sensitive to the cold, boots can protect paws from snow and ice. Stay Active Indoors and Out Regular exercise is essential for your dog’s health, especially when it’s chilly. On milder days, bundle up and head out for a brisk walk. But for snowy, or harsh winter days, make sure to keep play time short and monitor your dog for signs of cold discomfort. When outdoor time is a no-go, create indoor activities like puzzle toys, hide-and-seek games, or a mini agility course. Your pet will love the mental stimulation and bonding time. Care for Their Paws After outdoor outings, check your dog’s paws for ice, salt, or debris. Rinse them off with warm (not hot) water and apply a paw balm to keep them moisturised. Trim the fur between their paw pads to prevent ice from clumping. Embrace The Wonderfulness of Winter Winter wellness isn’t just about preventing problems – it’s about helping your dog embrace the season with joy. A well-cared-for pup is more energetic, playful, and ready to share those previous winter moments with you. At Ruffingtons, we are passionate about supporting your dog all year round, and our treats are perfect for rewarding your furry friend during training or play. So, bundle up by the fireplace, grab a box of Ruffingtons goodies, and make this winter unforgettable for you and your furry friend!

How Regular Pampering Can Improve Your Dog’s Wellbeing

As a loving dog owner, you’ll likely always be looking for ways to enhance your furry friends’ quality of life. One often overlooked way to do this is through regular pampering. Beyond just spoiling your pup, pampering contributes significantly to their mental, physical, and emotional wellbeing. Here’s how incorporating luxury care into your dog’s routine can elevate their quality of life. A Well-Groomed Pup is a Confident Pup Dogs thrive in environments where they feel comfortable and at ease. Regular grooming ensures your dog is clean, fresh, and free from discomfort. Whether strolling through the park or mingling at a pet-friendly café, a well-cared-for dog feels more at home in the world. Clean fur, trimmed nails, and a fresh coat don’t just make your pup look FABULOUS; they help them feel good, too. Adding luxury grooming products to your routine – like pet-friendly soothing shampoos and indulgent coat conditioners – can elevate their experience and leave them feeling like the star they are. Preventing Infections and Reducing Stress Luxury care isn’t just about appearances – it’s about wellness too. Routine grooming can prevent a host of health problems. Regular brushing and maintenance can help remove dirt and reduces the risk of skin infections, while ear cleaning and nail trimming prevent irritation and injury. When your dog feels physically well, they’re less likely to experience stress and anxiety. Healthy dogs are happy dogs, and pampering plays a vital role in keeping your furry friend in peak condition. Bonding Through Quality Time and Attention Pampering isn’t just about physical care – it’s all about creating moments of connection too. Whether you’re brushing their coat, giving them a relaxing massage (especially their paws), or simply spending extra quality time together, these activities strengthen your bond. Dogs are highly social creatures, and your attention reassures them of your love and commitment. It’s in these tender moments that trust and understanding between you and your dog deepen. The Joy of Treating Them to the Best When it comes to pampering, treating your pups to the best treats is a must. Ruffingtons treats are made from the finest, all-natural ingredients to satisfy even the most discerning canine palate.
